A tax credit program is available for certain high efficiency equipment. Energy Star has asked that manufacturers provide a Tax Credit Certificate for the tax payer's records. To comply with this request, Heat Controller has created separate certificates for geothermal units, furnaces, residential cooling equipment and mini-splits. Consult the individual equipment category below to download the certificate and to learn more about the tax credit program.

For Geothermal Tax Credit

Geothermal Tax Credit Certificate instructions

  2. Find the particular model and application type (open/closed loop) on the chart.
  3. "X" designates that the unit and application qualifies for energy star and the rebate.
  4. "N/A" designates that the unit or application does NOT qualify for energy star or the rebate.
  5. Match the model and application to the appropriate ARI reference number. The ARI reference number is required on the tax certificate.
  6. Download the tax certificate and fill in the required information.
  7. Keep any receipts/proof of purchase for the model(s) and installation costs. Save the completed tax certificate. You or Your tax advisor will need these documents to file for the tax rebate.

Tax Credits for Other Products

The Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 modified and extended Federal tax credits on qualifying, high-efficiency HVAC equipment through December 31, 2011. All equipment certified by this act must be installed after December 31, 2010, and before January 1, 2012—in other words, during calendar year 2011. The installation must be in a homeowner’s primary residence and must meet the criteria of “Qualified Energy Property” per Section 25C of the Internal Revenue Code.

For all residential energy tax credits, there is a cap of $500. Homeowners who have already claimed credits of $500 or more from improvements made prior to 2011 will be unable to claim new credits for improvements made during 2011. Here are the products covered by the current tax credit legislation:

  • Natural gas furnaces, propane furnaces and oil furnaces must achieve 95% AFUE to be eligible for credits.
  • Split system air conditioners including mini-splits must achieve 16 SEER/13EER.
  • Split system heat pumps including mini-splits must achieve 15 SEER / 12.5 EER / 8.5 HSPF.
  • Package air conditioners must achieve 14 SEER / 12 EER; package heat pumps must achieve 14 SEER / 12 EER / 8 HSPF.
  • Package gas/electric units must achieve 14 SEER / 12 EER.

Note: This information is provided to assist in identifying applicable tax credits on Comfort-Aire branded products and should not be considered tax advice by Heat Controller, Inc. Consult a tax professional to review specific circumstances and to determine whether the equipment purchase will qualify for a tax credit.

Look for the Leaf: R-410A is called an environmentally-friendly refrigerant because it does not contribute to the depletion of the earth's vital ozone layer, which provides a protective barrier against the sun's harmful UV rays. Soon all refrigerants used around the world will be replaced by non-ozone depleting refrigerants such as R-410A, which is already in use in many Comfort-Aire models. Look for equipment marked with the leaf, signifying that it's charged with R-410A.
